How a Small Simple Shift in Perspective Can Skyrocket Your Business

It was 8:00 am on a Friday morning. The sun was starting to heat up, it was the middle of summer. I’m sitting in a classroom and couldn’t wait for it to be over… so I could enjoy the rest of my day.

I love to learn, but I never really liked the school environment. In order for me to graduate high school I had to pass this ‘summer English class’. To this day, I can’t remember anything that was taught in the class itself.

What do remember to this day… was the teacher and what he would say every morning when he walked in. He would say this…

“OK, class today we’re going to work smarter, not harder.”

What a fantastic teacher! This guy (I don’t remember his name) was so positive and friendly… he was great.

Since that one summer day, I’ve always remembered that I want to be “working smarter, and not harder”.

Here’s a quick example of this…

Cheryl and I built our dream home from the ground up. When we first moved in over 21 years ago, I might have mowed the yard for the first year. Then I called the lawn care pros. They have my yard mowed in about 25 minutes.

It used to take me over an hour with a push mower… I’m freaking dying out there.

They’re speeding around on their fancy mowers, another guy is edging, and another one is blowing the grass off the driveway. They do a much better job than I ever did.

Now, to be completely transparent with you I was a little weird'ed out about someone else mowing my yard. I come from a hard-working blue-collar family. I started working in my grandfather’s Tavern when I was 10 years old.

Paying someone else to do this type of work felt strange to me. I remember listing to a cassette tape from a network marketing trainer. His name was Randy Gage, and he was teaching this course on prosperity.

He was talking about hourly rates. He said if you’re making $50 per hour, and you can get someone to do the job for less… you do it. For example, at the time my hourly rate was $100/hr and yet, I’m mowing my own yard… that’s expensive.

I got it… I thought!

The lawn care company mows my yard for $40 bucks (and does a much better job than me). Meanwhile, I’m working using my specialized skill set. I’m actually making money when other people are mowing my yard. This was very cool.

It’s interesting how we’re conditioned to think a certain way from our childhood. There are so many ways we can work smarter. Especially in our business, when it comes to doing the stuff we're not good at.
